The Players: Paulina Stark, soprano; Nadine Shank, piano American-Jewish Art Songs. Paulina Stark, soprano & Nadine Shank, piano. Music of Weiner, Helfman, Chajes, Stern, Bernstein, Fromm, Wyner. Soprano, Paulina Stark and pianist, Nadine Shank, collaborate on this disc featuring the extraordinary music of ten Jewish-American Art Song composers. The songs recorded here draw upon Jewish song with recitative or chanting of Biblical texts, folksong, and the great art of cantorial improvisation and coloratura, yet they represent a specific genre, the art song. The emergence of the Jewish art song is a fairly recent phenomenon. Its full flowering took place in the United States in this century, although the seeds were generously planted in Europe before the turn of the century. The composers have chosen texts ranging from ancient Biblical verses to the great Yiddish poetry of this century and the new living Hebrew of modern Israel. Music by Lazar and Yehudi Weiner, Chajes, Helfman, Neuman, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Stern, Gideon, Bernstein, Fromm. Paulina Stark has been a featured soloist in concert, oratorio, and opera, with major international orchestras. She has portrayed many leading lyric soprano roles in opera, particularly with the Houston Grand Opera. She has appeared in recital here and abroad and has made numberous appearances on NET and CBS network television. She was Professor of Voice at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=28271
Review: ?My great liking of this disc must, therefore, be a sign of the special quality it possesses. The stated aim in compiling it is to reveal the rich heritage of Jewish music as it moves from Hebrew to Yiddish to English and from sacred to contemporary. Stark and Shank succeed. American-Jewish Art Songs is a winner.Fanfare Magazine
